The Way To Think About Managed IT
Analogous to your family doctor telling you to eat healthy, exercise and take your medication as prescribed for the best possible outcomes.
In the world of Information technology it’s advisable for your business networks to include technologies like RMM, MDR and enterprise grade networking equipment for the best possible outcomes.
While no doctor can guarantee a healthy outcome, no technology firm can guarantee trouble free computing. But in either case there are common sense practices that lead to the highest probability of the best possible outcome.

Tools of the Trade
What is RMM, MDR and Enterprise Grade Networking Equipment?
These are the software & hardware solutions which are at the heart of Managed IT Services!
What is RMM Software
Remote Monitoring and Management (RMM) is a software platform used by IT professionals and managed service providers (MSPs) to remotely monitor, manage, and maintain IT systems and networks.
RMM software offers several essential functionalities including real-time 24/7 monitoring and alerting of endpoint systems (Computers, Laptops, Servers) alerting IT professionals to potential issues before they become disruptive problems. MSPs can automate routine IT tasks freeing up time for employees to focus on their work instead of their technology tools. RMM includes features such as installing patches, running scripts, and notifying of many hardware problems before they become catastrophic. It helps in tracking hardware and software inventory across the network.
RMM software operates by installing a small software agent on endpoint devices. These agents gather information about the device’s hardware and software and upload it to a secure cloud portal, allowing remote access and management by IT professionals
By leveraging RMM software, IT professionals can shift from a reactive break-fix model to a proactive managed services approach, identifying and resolving issues before they impact end-users
What is MDR Antivirus
Managed Detection and Response (MDR) is not just an antivirus program, but rather a comprehensive cybersecurity service that goes beyond traditional antivirus protection. MDR is a fully managed, 24/7 expert-led threat monitoring and response cybersecurity service that combines advanced technology with human expertise to detect, investigate, respond to and remediate cybersecurity threats in real time. Carsonix Inc. will be notified the moment any malicious activity is detected.
Organizations of all sizes across various industries use MDR services. It’s particularly beneficial for companies that lack in-house cybersecurity expertise. Unlike traditional consumer grade antivirus software that leaves everything up to the end user to do (scans, updates, etc.); MDR antivirus is managed by cybersecurity experts in a Security Operations Center (SOC) freeing up employees to concentrate on their work instead of wasting time.
We do not recommend the use of consumer grade antivirus solutions, full stop, even for residential users. They are full of gimmicky and bloated features that are heavy on system resources, slow down the computer and prompt the end user with popups to “scan this” or “update that” distracting them from their primary role in the office; furthermore, in most cases, end users do not specialize in or understand IT management and cybersecurity meaning they could potentially cause unwanted problems. Business grade MDR solutions are managed remotely by cybersecurity professionals.
What is Enterpise Grade Networking Equipment
Enterprise Grade Networking Equipment offers several key benefits for businesses looking to build robust and scalable networks:
- Cost-Effectiveness
- Scalability and Flexibility
- Centralized Management
- Advanced Features such as…
- Firewall & VPN Router for remote office access
- Intrusion Detection System
- Work filters to prevent access to known malicious websites
- Multiple SSIDs (Hotspots) for different purposes; Such as an Office Wi-Fi and a Guest Wi-Fi
- High Performance and Reliabiltity
- Network mapping & endpoint visibility
- Virtual Networks & Network Segregation
Food for Thought!
After years in this business, we’ve heard the same objections from decision-makers in every industry we’ve worked in:
- “Enterprise-grade networking gear is too expensive — we’ll think about it.”
- “MDR antivirus costs too much; consumer-grade or free antivirus is fine.”
- “I can’t justify spending on spam and phishing filters — we’re too small to be a target.”
- “It’s easier to reuse the same password everywhere; two-factor authentication is more hassle than it’s worth.”
- “We don’t have backups, but we’ve never needed them.”
It all comes back to the same false belief: it won’t happen to me. And then it does. We’ve seen it happen, and we’ve helped clients clean up afterward — and the cleanup is always far more expensive than the prevention would have been. Beyond the labor cost of remediation, if the damage can even be undone, there’s lost revenue during downtime, stolen client and financial data, fraud, outsized ransomware demands, and even lawsuits from clients whose information was exposed. The LifeLabs data breach a few years ago is a well-known example, and it’s far from the only one.
Almost everyone has a story about something happening that they never expected. The lesson is to learn from those stories before they become your own: be proactive, not reactive, about the network that underpins your business and your livelihood. The investment is justified when weighed against the alternative of doing nothing.
When the internet began — as ARPANET, a U.S. government project — it was built on an open philosophy: Computer A sends something to Computer B, and it’s accepted without question. As ARPANET grew into the modern internet, bad actors arrived, and security became essential. Over time we’ve layered on firewalls, passwords, encryption, user permissions, antivirus, 2FA/MFA, VPNs, and more. But that added complexity has introduced its own vulnerabilities: the more moving parts a system has, the more places a gap can hide.
Attackers do go after large targets deliberately, but they also cast a wide net — for example, sending phishing emails to thousands of addresses pulled from lists traded on the dark web — and if you happen to land in that net, they’ll turn their full attention on you.
There’s no such thing as perfect security. If there were, this conversation — and the cybersecurity industry itself — wouldn’t need to exist. But there’s a great deal you can do now, using well-established, common-sense practices, to dramatically reduce the odds of a catastrophic incident later. That’s exactly why properly managed IT matters so much.
Security also has to be balanced against usability, and the right mix of tools looks different for every business. That’s why solutions should be tailored to your needs rather than applied one-size-fits-all.
The bottom line: doing nothing shouldn’t be a consideration.
